Chioggia
Chioggia is located between the sea and the southern end of the Venice Lagoon.
Because of its position in the geographical context of the Venice Lagoon and for the peculiarity of its architectural, landscape and environmental heritage, it has been included by UNESCO in the list of the world heritage of humanity.
The beautiful and characteristic historical center is structured by calli (typical small streets) and bridges that intersect each other and that, passing through the whole city, go to give the characteristic “herringbone” shape.
Chioggia is crossed by three canals overlooking elegant Venetian-style buildings and colorful houses.
The Canal Vena is crossed by nine bridges.
The historic center with its churches and museums is a treasure full of artworks and architecture.
Among the major and unmissable attractions:
Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, Bell Tower of the Cathedral and the Church of San Martino, the Church of San Domenico whith the great crucifix – the Christ came from the sea – here you can read the ancient legend.
Porta Garibaldi, the Civic Museum of the South Lagoon, Corso del Popolo, Church of San Giacomo.
The bell tower of Sant’Andrea also known as the Clock Tower, 30 meters high, contains the oldest tower clock in the world, dated 1386. Inside it there is a vertical museum with several floors and on the top the panoramic terrace from where you can admire the landscape of the whole Chioggia.
The Column of Vigo is one of the symbols of Chioggia: on its top there is a sculpture of a small lion called “El gato de Ciosa” or “The cat of Chioggia”.
